The European Parliament has announced that it has adopted the European Commission’s recommendation regarding the Critical Raw Materials Act, expanding the list to 34 materials, including coking coal. Thus, Europe's coking coal exports will be limited in line with the region's consumption.

The Critical Raw Materials Act, which is expected to ensure the EU’s access to a secure sustainable supply of critical raw materials, is said to promote innovation along the entire value chain, support SMEs, and boost research and development of alternative materials and more environmentally-friendly mining as well as production methods.

Meanwhile, the list compromising 34 materials does not include scrap. The European Steel Association has stated a number of times that the EU’s scrap needs will drastically increase with the transition to green steel and has called for scrap to be included in the list of critical raw materials also, as SteelOrbis previously reported.
