India’s steel ministry directs industry stakeholders to frame 10-year R&D roadmap

India’s ministry of steel has directed domestic steel companies and all industry stakeholders to frame a comprehensive medium-term research and development roadmap, a ministry official said on Friday, May 12.

The official stated that the directive was issued at a recent meeting between the ministry and steel companies, academia, research laboratories, design and engineering companies, and steel sector consultancies.

The ministry has sought a ten-year roadmap from the latter organizations encompassing beneficiation of iron ore and coal, carbon capture technologies, utilization of waste from steel production, decarbonization of steelmaking processes, and the use of bio-char to replace coke or coal in at least some stages of steelmaking.
