German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp has announced that the European Commission has approved up to €2 billion funding from the German government for its thH2Steel decarbonization project.
Within the scope of the project, the company will commission a 100 percent hydrogen-capable direct reduction plant in Duisburg at the end of 2026. The plant with an annual production capacity of 2.5 million mt of direct reduced iron is scheduled to operate with around 143,000 mt of hydrogen per year as early as 2029. With the plant, the company’s annual carbon saving will ultimately total up to 3.5 million mt.
