Norwegian decarbonized steel developer Blastr Green Steel has announced that it is considering Redcar Bulk Terminal port in the UK as a potential location to be developed for its pellet plant.

The plant will have an annual production capacity of six million mt of high-quality (direct reduction) DR pellets. Approximately half of the pellet volumes will be used as feedstock for the company’s ultra-low carbon steel plant planned in Inkoo, Finland, while the rest will be sold by US-based Cargill Metals for distribution to the global market.

The company continues to explore alternative locations for its pellet plant in both Norway and the UK and plans to decide on the pellet plant location during the second half of 2023.

Blastr Green Steel expects to make the final investment decision for the plant, estimated at a cost of over £1 billion, in 2025, with a tentative plan to start operations in 2027.
