The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) have secured a $6.37 million grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency for a project intended to increase clean steel production, according to a joint statement released by the trio.
The project in question will focus on reducing the impact of domestic construction activities, steel production and product manufacturing on the environment by increasing the quality, transparency, and geographic coverage of life cycle inventories and environmental product declaration (EPD) for steel products. In the meantime, the grant will allow the group to develop life cycle inventory and EPD tools that will automatically generate steel product EPDs, and to create an EPD repository. Also, the project will determine deconstruction processes for existing structures, required tests for recovered materials, and required modifications and fabrication data to increase the use of salvaged steel products.
