In a report to the Sault Ste. Marie City Commission from Acting City Manager Robin Troyer, the ammonia leak at Essar Steel Algoma on Monday was stated to not “pose any immediate risk,” according to the company’s communications manager Brenda Stenta. “The leaking valve was replaced (Tuesday) and the (Ontario) Ministry of Environment was notified and are on the site investigating.”
Stenta explained the open air tank houses the ammonia liquor, a byproduct of the coke manufacturing process, and a soil berm around the perimeter of the tank was constructed years ago to contain any of the fluid in the event of a leak. “It’s unfortunate, but we are taking the necessary steps to collect it.”
Additionally, the diluted ammonia does not pose an airborne risk, according to the company, as it was already housed in an open air tank. Collection efforts underway indicate that the leaking fluid will not be able to find its way into the St. Marys River watershed, and as a result there should be no environmental impact to those who live down river of the steel plant.
