ArcelorMittal Brazil has launched an “innovation lab” in the city of Nova Lima, in the state of Minas Gerais, the company said this week.
The lab, which aims to stimulate “innovative” ideas for the steel sector and its value chain, is part of a BRL 30 million ($7.7 million) investment the steelmaker has planned involving digital and information technology innovations through 2018.
The lab, nicknamed “Açolab,” or Steellab in Portuguese, will also host client meetings and training sessions.
Jefferson de Paula, CEO at ArcelorMittal South America Long Steel division, said the initiative is unique within the steelmaker among the 60 countries it operates.
“The Açolab will allow us to further reinforce our relationship with clients, as we seek increased efficiencies in our operations and (aim) to expand business models,” he said.
