Brazilian carbon steel scrap exports maintain uptrend

During the first eleven months of 2023, Brazil exported 695,400 mt mt of carbon steel scrap, 115 percent more than the 323,600 mt exported during the same period of 2022.

Considering only November, such exports increased on yearly basis by 326 percent to 77,500 mt.

The average export price of the Brazilian scrap in November 2023 was $339/mt, FOB conditions, against $277/mt in November 2022.

The sharp increase of scrap exports still reflects the lower domestic steel production, which for its turn points to lower domestic sales, which were in a large extent replaced by imports, chiefly from China and Russia.

According to analysts, in the short to mid-terms, steel imports are expected to decline in Brazil, while the domestic production should rise, raising expectations for more domestic demand for steel scrap and lower exports of the product.
