Natural Resources Canada has announced that it has added high-purity iron ore, along with two other minerals - phosphorus and silicon metal - to the country’s critical minerals list. High-purity iron ore is used in green steelmaking and decarbonization.
“Investments in critical minerals projects create good jobs for workers, more avenues for Canadian innovation and lower emissions across the country - all of which form an important part of our plan to build a cleaner Canada and a sustainable economy,” Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of energy and natural resources, said.
Welcoming the addition of high-purity iron ore to the list, Canadian iron ore company Champion Iron Limited has stated that such a recognition highlights a rare solution to decarbonize the steel industry, which represents nearly 10 percent of global carbon emissions.
