According to Statistics Canada, Canadian employment rose by 67,000 (+0.4 percent) in September, with most of the increase in part-time work. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.0 percent, as more people participated in the labor market.
In the third quarter of 2016, employment gains totaled 62,000 (+0.3 percent). This followed little change in employment in the second quarter and a slight increase of 33,000 (+0.2 percent) in the first quarter.
Compared with 12 months earlier, employment rose by 139,000 (+0.8 percent), with most of the gains in part-time work. Over the same period, the total number of hours worked edged up 0.2 percent.
There were also more people employed in transportation and warehousing (+8,300) in September. However, there was little change compared with 12 months earlier.

The number of employees was little changed in both the private and public sectors in September. Compared with 12 months earlier, the number of private sector employees increased by 106,000 (+0.9 percent), while public sector employment was little changed.
