Chilean steelmaker CAP Acero, from the CAP group, has teamed up with MMFX Technologies Corporation to produce then export MMFX’s high-strength ChrōmX 9100 rebar to Chile and South America, MMFX announced this week.
The rebar is currently being produced at CAP Acero’s Huachipato mill in the city of Talcahuano. MMFX said the rebar CAP Acero is producing is corrosion resistant and can last for over 100 years.
According to a press-release, CAP Acero already produced the “first heat” of the product, which can now be sold in Chile and across Latin America. As for MMFX, the partnership helps it expand its reach, said Michael Pompay, president at MMFX Technologies Corporation.
“The establishment of our production partnership with CAP Steel will help us serve Chile and surrounding countries, as well as grow sales of ChrōmX rebar with the help of our marketing partner, Broom Group SA,” the company said.
In addition to the ChrōmX 9100 rebar, CAP Acero expects to produce MMFX’s full series of rebar, including 9000, 4000 and 2000.
MMFX noted that corrosion in rebar structures is a “significant” problem in Chile, given the country’s expansive coastal marine environment and the corrosive soils of the Atacama Desert, where a “significant share of the mining industry is located.”
MMFX said the ASTM A1035 standard under which ChrōmX is sold in North America is in the process of being adopted in Chile according to the standards of the country’s institute of norms, INN.
