Chilean steelmaker Cintac, from the CAP Group, has announced it will build an 8-MWp solar rooftop system at its Santiago plant, located in the commune of Maipu. According to Cintac, the system is South Cone’s largest solar rooftop.
Built over a 90,000-cubic-meter area at its Santiago plant, the photovoltaic (PV) rooftop system has a capacity that could supply electricity to some 5,000 households of five people.
The company expects to start up the project by H2 2016.
According to Cintac, the project will offset 4,000 tones of CO2 emissions per year, and it plans to market the system to different industries in the country.
In H2 2015, the Chilean specialty steel producer announced it was going to provide PV trackers and steel components for NEXTracker’s solar projects in Chile.
Cintac has already provided steel foundations for NEXTracker’s Crucero and Javiera projects in the Atacama desert and with last year’s announcement it has expanded its supply of specialty steels for the US company.
