Chilean steelmaker CAP Acero is fighting to increase existing duties for imported wire rod, according to local media.
CAP is said to be claiming a 63.1 percent duty on the product bought overseas, as opposed to the current 37.8 percent imports tariff applied recently by the nation’s price distortion commission, CNDP.
CNDP’s decision followed a request from CAP Acero, which said at the time the decision should “minimize” damages the steel imports caused to the local industry.
The “ad valorem”, a provisional safeguarding imports tariff, was applied on October 6, 2015 by CNDP and should last up to six months.
Local press said Gerdau supported CAP’s request.
