China’s MIIT seeks to curb excessive growth of steel output

On June 29, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) held a symposium on curbing the excessive growth of domestic steel production, at which attendees included representatives from local industrial authorities, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) and nine large-scale steelmakers.

At the symposium, the MIIT placed emphasis on six points in the efforts to deal with the current situation:
1. Further implementation of the plan for restructuring and invigorating the Chinese steel industry;
2. Execution of the requirements of in the recent announcement on curbing excessive growth of steel production;
3. Drawing up of plans for the rest of 2009 and for 2010 based on the objective analysis of the current situation;
4. Boosting the elimination of dated capacities and mergers by establishing specific regulations;
5. To enforce self-discipline on the part of relevant bodies and enterprises;
6. Encouragement of the development of domestic mines and promotion of bargaining power in international iron ore talks.
