CMIC: Drop in Mexican construction material prices providing small boost to industry

Tuesday, 30 June 2009 10:06:15 (GMT+3)   |

As construction activity in Mexico has declined, construction materials have been decreasing in price, announced Carlos Maiz Garcia, chairman of the Mexican Bureau of the Construction Industry (CMIC).

The decrease in construction material costs have provided the industry some relief and has also benefited the consumer, said Mr. Maiz. cited as an example the fact that rebar prices are significantly cheaper now than they were last year, granting construction companies relief in their input costs.

Mr. Maiz said that the construction sector in Mexico is facing uncertainty as people are hesitating to buy houses and businessmen are reluctant to invest in commercial property. He also said that despite the uncertain environment, construction projects are still taking place, though at a slower than normal pace, and that Infonavit, a government organization responsible for providing mortgages to low-income families in Mexico, is creating a program to allow people with and without permanent jobs to buy a house.
