Coal exports from Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminals based at Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, totaled 8.16 million mt in January this year, decreasing by 21.9 percent compared to December, according to the company's announcement. 14 percent of the total coal handled at the terminals in January was coking coal.
According to the released information, Japan was the largest export destination for coal shipments from PWCS in January, with shipments to Japan accounting for 51.4 percent of total shipments, while coal exports to South Korea made up 21.01 percent of the total.
PWCS accounts for one third of Australia's exports of coal, which is the country's second most important export commodity in terms of value.
