Consumption of finished steel products in Mexico down 9.1 percent in October

Apparent consumption of finished steel products in the Mexican market decreased 9.1 percent, year-over-year, in October to 2.33 million metric tons (mt). This is the fifth consecutive annual decrease, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.

The consumption of the most affected products was wire rod with a drop of 25.2 percent, rebar a decrease of 23.5 percent and wire with a reduction of 21.0 percent.

On the side of the manufacturing of finished steel products, in October it totaled 1.57 million mt, 8.9 percent less, year-over-year. This is the ninth consecutive annual reduction.

As in consumption, the products with the greatest impact in production were rebar with an annual reduction of 26.4 percent, wire production decreased 22.3 percent and wire rod with a decrease of 21.8 percent, year over year, in October.

In the January-October period, consumption decreased 4.5 percent or 1.1 million mt to 23.26 million mt and the manufacture of finished steel products decreased 7.5 percent or 1.24 million mt to 15.24 million mt.
