According to first estimates released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, in January this year the seasonally-adjusted production of the construction sector in the European Union member states (EU-28) increased by 1.3 percent as compared to December and was up 7.3 percent compared to the same month of 2013. In December, production had increased by 1.2 percent compared to the previous month.
In the euro area, the seasonally-adjusted production of the construction sector in January of the current year grew 1.5 percent month on month, while increasing by 8.8 percent compared to January 2013. In December, production had increased by 1.3 percent in the euro area compared to November, according to the newly revised data.
Building construction in the EU-28 in January increased by 1.6 percent month on month and by 8.1 percent year on year, while civil engineering output in the region decreased by 1.8 percent from December and was up 3.8 percent year on year.
As compared to December, construction output in January increased in the Slovenia by 22.4 percent, in Spain by 5.8 percent and in Germany by 4.4 percent, while a decrease of 4.3 percent was registered in Romania, a decline of 3.9 percent was recorded in Slovakia and a decrease of 2.2 percent was seen in France.
As compared to January 2013, construction output in January of the current year increased in Slovenia by 42.8 percent, in Spain by 17.6 percent, in Hungary by 15.9 percent and in Germany by 14.1 percent, while a decrease of 14.0 percent was registered in Portugal, a decline of 9.2 percent was recorded in Romania and a decline of 7.9 percent was witnessed in Italy.
