According to Bloomberg, the EU is seeking a last-minute deal with the US regarding trade measures as the exemption granted by the US to the EU from the Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports expire at the end of May.
“We’re at the beginning of a decisive week. We have to try to avoid higher tariffs if possible and that means we’re ready to agree with the Americans on points that are necessary in our mutual interest.” German economy minister Peter Altmaier said.
US commerce secretary Wilbur Ross and the EU’s trade chief Cecilia Malmstrom will meet this week to discuss the matter.
In March, the US imposed 25 percent duty on steel and aluminum imports, while granting exemptions to the EU and some other countries until May 1, before later extending the deadline until June 1.
