EU to allocate TRQs for five products from UK to N. Ireland

The European Commission has announced that it plans to allocate tariff-rate quota volumes for five categories of steel product shipped from the UK to Northern Ireland.

The products subject to new quotas will include stainless hot rolled sheets and strips, stainless cold rolled sheets and strips, rebar, large welded tubes, and non-alloy wire. 25 percent tariff duty will be applied on the given products if the tariff rate quotas are exceeded.

The UK is subject to quotas for some products for exports to Northern Ireland, which is continuing to follow EU custom rules following Brexit. In February this year, the European Commission and the UK government made a new deal, called the Windsor Framework, for post-Brexit arrangements regarding the trade and custom processes of North Ireland, removing 25 percent tariff on certain ex-UK steel imports to the region, as SteelOrbis previously reported.
