Euro area industrial output down 1.2 percent in May from April

In May this year, seasonally-adjusted industrial production decreased by 1.2 percent in the euro area and by 1.1 percent in the EU-28, as compared with April, while industrial production in April had risen by 1.4 percent in the euro area and by 1.5 percent in the EU-28, both on month-on-month basis. In May this year compared with May 2015, industrial production increased by 0.5 percent in the euro area and by 1.1 percent in the EU-28. These figures are released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union
 
As compared to April, in May this year the production of durable goods decreased by 1.4 percent in the euro area and was down by 0.7 percent in the EU-28, while the production of non-durable consumer goods narrowed by 0.1 percent in the euro area and was down 0.3 percent in the EU-28. In May this year, production of capital goods decreased by 2.3 percent in the euro area and was down by two percent in the EU-28 area, while the production of intermediate goods decreased by 0.4 percent in the euro area and by 0.5 percent in the EU-28, all month on month. Meanwhile, production of energy decreased by 4.3 percent in the euro area and by 3.3 percent in the EU-28, month on month. 
 
Among the member states, in May the highest month-on-month decreases were registered in the Netherlands (-7.8 percent), Portugal (-4.4 percent), Greece (-4.3 percent) and Romania (-4.0 percent), and the highest increases in Lithuania (+3.9 percent), Latvia (+2.4 percent), Slovenia (+0.6 percent) and Malta (+0.3 percent).
 
As compared to the same month of 2015, in May this year production of durable consumer goods decreased by 0.9 percent in the euro area and was up by 0.8 percent in the EU-28, production of intermediate goods rose by 0.8 percent both in the euro area and in the EU-28, while production of capital goods increased by 0.3 percent in the euro area and by one percent in the EU-28, all year on year. In May this year, production of non-durable consumer goods increased by 0.8 percent in the euro area and by 1.5 percent in the EU-28, while production of energy narrowed by 1.1 percent in the euro area and was down by two percent in the EU-28, both on year-on-year basis.
 
Among the member states for which data are available, in May of the current year the largest year-on-year increases were registered in Slovakia (+6.0 percent), Ireland (+5.8 percent), Latvia (+5.1 percent) and Slovenia (+5.0 percent), and the largest decreases in Malta (-3.7 percent), Bulgaria (-3.3 percent) and Portugal (-2.4 percent).
