The EVRAZ steel mill in Pueblo will idle about 450 workers for up to three weeks to adjust for a slowdown in orders. The plant’s rod-and-bar mill will continue to operate.
“EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel has announced the temporary idling of its steelmaking and rail mill operations effective March 19 and 26, respectively. The idling, which is expected to last 2 to 3 weeks, is necessary to align production with demand,” the company said in a statement.
“Rail demand has been impacted by the downturn in commodity markets, specifically coal, metals and oil, and the continued high volume of unfairly traded steel imports.”
The company added that “EVRAZ continues to be the largest manufacturer of rail steel in North America, supplying a full portfolio of high-quality rail, including premium and standard rail, and Apex G2HH next generation premium rail.”
