The Italian steel industry ranks first in Europe for decarbonization and circularity, as highlighted in the 2023 Sustainability Report by Federacciai, the association of Italian steel producers. This fifth edition of the report showcases Italy as the leading producer of electric arc furnace steel in the EU and the top G7 country in terms of per capita production in this sector.
Investments by Italian steel companies have been primarily focused on efficiency, digitalization, environment, and safety, representing 80 percent of total investments. Since 1990, the sector has reduced CO2 emissions by 60 percent and energy consumption by 33 percent since 2000. Italian steel is distinguished by its low carbon intensity and high energy efficiency, with a performance 40 percent better than the European average.
The report emphasizes that over 85 percent of Italian production comes from recycled scrap, with Italy leading the EU in recycling volumes. Additionally, 76 percent of steel industry waste is recovered.
Transparency in reporting is a key point, with 90 percent of national production coming from companies that voluntarily report their sustainability performance. These companies are increasingly integrating ESG (environmental, social, and governance) factors into their business models.
Italian steel plants are adopting the best available techniques to improve their environmental performance. "100 percent of Italian steel plants have certified environmental management systems," stated Federacciai. "NOx emissions have decreased by 62 percent since 1990; water consumption by 19 percent since 2010; and waste production by 14 percent since 2012."
The Italian steel industry also stands out for the high proportion of its revenue generated from exports, accounting for 40 percent of the activity of steel plants. Human capital development is crucial, with a 30 percent increase in training hours in 2022.
Italian steel companies favor permanent contracts, which constitute 97 percent of the total, ensuring job stability and worker cohesion. Entrepreneurs continue to invest passionately in innovation, engaging new generations in the challenges of ecological and digital transition, with a renewed focus on the local areas where their plants are located.
The report includes case studies illustrating the initiatives of Italian companies in decarbonization, environmental and social sustainability, and culture.
