Ferrous scrap consumption in China up 1.7 percent in January-April

In the January-April period this year, China’s output of pig iron and crude steel totaled 284.99 million mt and 343.67 million mt, down 4.3 percent and 3.0 percent year on year, while total national ferrous scrap consumption amounted to 79.31 million mt, increasing by 1.7 percent year on year.

Consolidated scrap consumption reached 230.8 kg/mt, with an increase of 10.6 kg/mt, or 4.8 percent, compared to the same period of last year. In particular, the scrap consumption via converters amounted to 184.5 kg/mt, increasing by 5.8 percent year on year, while scrap consumption via electric furnaces totaled 657.9 kg/mt, up 2.7 percent year on year.
