Brazilian integrated steelmaker Gerdau has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with energy producer Power Global to develop a solar project at its Midlothian mill in Texas, the steelmaker said.

Power Global will help Gerdau build the Gerdau Solar project, which consists of an 80-megawatt power plant made up of 231,000 solar panels. The plant will provide energy to Gerdau’s Midlothian mill in Texas.

The PPA agreement will provide the Midlothian mill solar energy for a 20-year timeline. The power plant will be attached to Gerdau’s EAF mini-mill. The mill produces rebar, merchant bar and beams.

Construction of the Gerdau solar facility should start by the end of 2020 and should be completed by the end of 2021.
