Head of Ameri-Source International to plead guilty to smuggling graphite electrodes

Pittsburgh-based Ameri-Source International Inc., which supplies electrodes used to power electric arc furnaces, will reportedly plead guilty to smuggling Chinese graphite electrodes into the U.S.

Ajay Goel, owner of the company, allegedly lied about the size of the electrodes to evade antidumping duties, according to federal court records. The US Department of Commerce has levied a nearly 160 percent duty on electrodes that are less than 16 inches in diameter.

Goel’s attorney told the Associated Press he would enter a guilty plea Monday, but did not offer further comment.
