Indian domestic steelmaking capacity hits 161 million mt per year

India’s domestic steelmaking capacity has touched 161 million mt per year, secretary of the ministry of steel, Nagendra Nath Sinha, said on Tuesday, November 7.

Mr. Sinha said that, of the total installed capacity, the basic oxygen furnace (MOF) route accounted for 67 million mt per year, the electric arc furnace (EAF) route for 36 million mt and the induction furnace (IF) route for 58 million mt per year. 

He said this was well in line with achieving the target of 300 million mt per year of installed capacity by 2030 as envisaged the government’s National Steel Policy.
