India’s retail sales as denoted by new registration of automobiles across all categories were recorded at 2,289,603 units in May this year, a growth of 2.61 percent year on year, according to the data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers’ Association (FADA) on Monday, June 10.
However, retail sales of all categories of automobiles were down 5.28 percent from April this year.
According to the FADA data, sales of two-wheelers increased 2.5 percent in May, while the passenger car segment suffered a decline of one percent and commercial vehicle sales increased by four percent, all year on year.
Two-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles suffered contractions of 6.6 percent, 9.5 percent and 8.0 percent respectively in sales in May this year compared to April, the data showed.
According to FADA, heatwave conditions across the country, the lack of new models and the national elections were the main causes of the slowdown in retail sales of automobiles.
