IREPAS has voiced its concerns about the protectionism in the steel industry

Following the recent imposition of import taxes as high as $133/mt by Israel on rebar, the International Rebar Exporters and Producers Association (IREPAS) has raised its concerns about the protectionism spreading in the steel industry.

Speaking on behalf of producers and exporters of long steel products; IREPAS chairman Ugur Dalbeler said: "We are very concerned about the recent changes in customs tariffs regarding long steel products in certain countries. Unfortunately we are not sure if these changes would be good for the public interest in those countries or for the steel industry worldwide"

Ugur Dalbeler added: "Free trade is one the few unambiguously good things and it is based on the idea of comparative advantage. Most commodities freely trade around the world and this allows resources to flow to their best use. Countries and companies that have embraced this message have thrived and prospered. Those that tried to close themselves off from this trend have not. Competition increases efficiency and serves customers and the public. IREPAS always supports free and fair trade in steel."

IREPAS is the association of producers and exporters of long steel products. It was started by CELSA and GERDAU more than 25 years ago to develop understanding between producers, traders and consumers around the world. Today, IREPAS unites producers, traders, consumers and professionals from the shipping and finance industries.
