Iron pellet production in Mexico falls to 2002 levels

Iron pellet production in Mexico fell 18.8 percent year-over-year in October to 375,843 metric tons (mt). That volume is the lowest in the past 22 years, according to a SteelOrbis analysis of data from the national statistics agency Inegi.

Although production declined in the three main producing regions, the biggest drop was in the vicinity of ArcelorMittal, in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán with an annual drop of 43.5 percent to 64,332 mt.

In the cities of Cuauhtémoc and Manzanillo, in Colima, the annual reduction was 10.8 percent and 10.7 percent to total 126,349 mt and 185,162 mt, respectively.

In the January-October period, iron pellet production in Mexico totaled 5.01 million mt, 12.6 percent more than the same period in 2023.
