In May in Italy, Italian crude steel production amounted at 1.9 million mt, marking a decrease of 3.5 percent compared to May 2023. According to Federacciai, the Italian federation of steel companies, since the beginning of the current year, Italian steel production, equal to 9.0 million mt, showed a decline of 5.5 percent year on year.

Different dynamics have been seen between long products and flats. Long products returned to growth by 1.8 percent year on year to 1.2 million mt, and they positioned themselves at the average volumes of the month over the decade. Otherwise, the flats, totaling 765 thousand mt, continued their decline, with a decrease of 7.5% year on year (attenuated compared to the drops in the February-April period).
In the first five months of the year, longs production, amounting at 5.3 million mt recorded a decline of 1.0 percent year on year, while flats production, totaling 3.8 million mt, experienced a contraction of 9.3 percent year on year.
