Steel trade between Italy and non-EU countries in January this year saw a year-on-year decline in both imports and exports, according to data released by Federacciai, the Italian steel producers association.
In particular, Italy imported 822,000 mt of steel from non-EU countries, or 34.2 percent less than in January 2022. At the same time, exports amounted to 191,000 mt, registering a decrease of 17.3 percent year on year.
On the import side, long products decreased by 3.3 percent year on year to 88,000 mt: in particular, wire rod imports decreased by 35.6 percent to 29,000 mt. Flat products declined by 40.4 percent to 514,000 mt imported, including 234,000 mt of coils (-25.2%), 96,000 mt of tinplate (+269.2%), 57,000 mt of electrical sheet (+9.6%) and 54,000 mt of cold rolled sheet (-73.9%).
In the export segment, however, long products dropped 22.4 percent to 38,000 mt, including 15,000 mt of wire rod (-21.1%). Flat product exports fell by 14 percent to 49,000 mt, including 16,000 mt of hot rolled and wide flat sheets (down 33.3 percent) and 13,000 mt of hot dip galvanized sheets (up 160%).
Finally, 1st manufacturing products showed a 43.5 percent increase in imports to 66,000 mt and a 19.3 percent decrease in exports to 88,000 mt, year on year.
