During a panel held in Karabuk, Turkey, about the problems facing the Turkish steel industry, Mesut Uğur Yılmaz, general manager of Turkish integrated long steel producer Kardemir, has called on the Turkish government to protect the Turkish steel industry from unfair competition, according to a report by Fortune Turkey.
As stated by Mr. Yılmaz, while Turkey’s steel consumption is growing, the continuous decline of domestic steel production has created a dangerous situation for the industry. He went on to say that the Turkish steel industry should be protected from dumped or subsidized imports and that consolidation of the local steel industry and the closure of inefficient capacities should be encouraged. Mr. Yılmaz also stated that domestic products should be promoted in local projects and that the government should block cheap imports through trade measures.
