Liberty Steel and Wire, a US-based subsidiary of UK-based steelmaker Liberty Steel, will temporarily idle its wire mill in Peoria, Illinois, from December 6, according to a spokesperson from Liberty Steel. The decision has been made due to the current challenges faced by the US market, including low-priced imports.
The closure of the wire mill will affect 280 workers. The mill is expected to restart operations early February next year.
In September, the company reduced production at its melt shop and rod mill in Peoria and minimized production at its wire mill due to the same problem, as SteelOrbis previously reported. The rod plant in Peoria is now expected to restart on March 3, 2025, pending the acceptance of “certain financial deals”.
