UK-based Liberty Steel Group has announced that it set out the next phase of its greensteel strategy with investment programs as it prepares for the post-pandemic economy.
Accordingly, the company will boost production at Rotherham from 500,000 mt to over 1 million mt per year through investments to expand its product mix and making more productive use of its rolling mills to target attractive market segments.
Liberty Steel aims to meet the rebar demand of the local market by displacing imports and expanding the greensteel product range of Thrybergh Bar Mill at Rotherham. The company has announced that it will produce greensteel rebar from September 2020.
The company has also commissioned Italian Danieli to develop its longer-term plans for a Greensteel hub at Liberty Steel Newport, investing in Danieli’s latest energy efficient electric arc furnace technology and other site upgrades to create a compact direct cast strip plant capable of producing 1.5-2 million mt per year of thin gauge HRC for the UK market.
“With the new developments at Thrybergh Bar Mill, the business is well prepared to win a greater share of the construction market in the UK with a competitive greensteel rebar offering for projects,” said Sanjeev Gupta, Liberty Steel Group executive chairman.
