Russia-based leading global iron ore and hot briquetted iron (HBI) producer Metalloinvest has announced that it has implemented a major environmental project at the electric arc furnaces No. 1 and No. 2 at its subsidiary Oskol Metallurgical Plant (OEMK) to reduce emissions.
Accordingly, the second module of the new flue gas cleaning unit at the electric arc furnaces No. 1 and No. 2 at OEMK, which is the final stage of a large-scale investment project on reconstruction of the entire flue gas cleaning system in the mentioned electric arc furnaces, was put into commercial operation. The first module of the gas cleaning (at electric furnaces No. 3 and No. 4) was put into operation in February 2013. The investment for the total project amounted to almost RUB 2.7 billion ($40.2 million).
Metalloinvest stated that, with the new flue gas cleaning system, emissions into the surrounding atmosphere from the furnaces will be reduced twofold and the dust concentration in the exhaust gases will be reduced by three or more times.
