Mexican automotive industry association AMIA said this week Canada should be included in the discussions for a trade agreement involving Mexico and the US.
“AMIA has been following, since the beginning, the negotiation process for the modernization of NAFTA,” it said in a statement.
“It’s necessary to include Canada into the negotiations, so we can conclude the modernization of this trilateral agreement to promote and consolidate the (automotive) producing chains,” AMIA said.
AMIA said it would continue negotiations under private sector advisory group, known as Cuarto de Junto, to include Canada in the ongoing agreement.
AMIA said Canada’s inclusion in the agreement aims to “assure” the agreement’s results will maintain the existing automotive producing chains, “our biggest integration into the North America region and its competitively.”
Mexico and the US have reached this week a preliminary trade agreement. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, Section 232 negotiations will be handled separately. Meanwhile, both Mexico and the US will keep existing imports tariffs over each other’s steel exports.
