The Mexican automotive industry has appeared to surpass the "lost decade"; in May 2013, domestic car sales reached 2002 levels, and even record sales levels for the month of May with a growth of 9 percent (more than 87,000 units sold).
According to a report from the Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA), production from domestic manufacturing units increased four percentage points in May, rising to 45-49 percent. Meanwhile, imports of new vehicles lost ground in the domestic market in Mexico.
The agency reported that the annual sales of the industry were 1,022,290 units in May 2013 (the sum of the 12 months from June 2012 to May 2013), reflecting a growth of 8.2 percent above the same period in 2012 with a total of 944,856.
Additionally, the domestic sale of light units in the market increased in the first five months of 2013 by 9 percent, at 418,274 units compared to 383,731 vehicles in the same period last year.
According to a report from the Mexican Association of Automotive Industry (AMIA) the light vehicle market in May of 2013 in Mexico amounted to 87,518 units; this figure was higher than the previous year, which came to 80,267 units, and even exceeded the 80,206 placed in 2002, so that the units sold in May represents the highest figure for the month of May in automotive history in Mexico.
