The apparent consumption of rolled steel plate in Mexico increased 48.2 percent in June, year-over-year, to 209,000 metric tons (mt), the sixth consecutive annual increase in at least so far this year, from according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.
Also, the consumption of sheet steel plate surged up in June with an increase of 120.5 percent, year-over-year, to 183,000 mt. So far this year, it registered five annual increases.
Rolled plate production increased 13.4 percent, year-over-year, to 161,000 mt, the sixth consecutive annual increase (information from Canacero does not include production figures for sheet steel plate).
In June, 133,000 mt of sheet plate were imported, 232.5 percent or 93,000 mt more than the same month last year. Of the rolled plate, 62,000 mt were imported, 63.2 percent more.
In exports, rolled plate totaled 15,000 mt in June, 60.5 percent less compared to the 38,000 mt exported in June 2022.
In the accumulated first half of the year, the consumption of rolled steel plate registered an annual increase of 34.9 percent to 1.25 million mt, while plate in sheet increased 53.9 percent to 836,000 mt. The production of rolled steel plate increased 48.6 percent to 1.11 million mt (no sheet plate production figures were available).
The cumulative import of sheet plate increased 129.7 percent in the first half of the year to 586,000 mt while the import of rolled plate decreased 17.7 percent to 259,00 mt. In exports, rolled plate decreased 11.2 percent to 121,000 mt in the first six months of the year.
