The Mexican steel company DeAcero expects to consume more than 4.7 million metric tons (mt) of metal scrap per year for the production of green steel upon completing the capacity expansion in the northern city of Ramos Arizpe, the company reported in a press release.
“We decided to allocate $1.0 billion over the next three years in a commitment to green steel, which will allow us to recycle more than 4.7 million mt of steel per year,” the company reported when announcing its “industrial intelligence” model.
In addition to the optimization of processes and the efficient use of resources, DeAcero's “industrial intelligence” is also a comprehensive commitment to human development, social and economic progress, and environmental protection.
Currently, with the consumption of 4.0 million mt of metal scrap, the company produces 4.5 million mt steel per year and more than 1.4 million mt wire. The company has more than 30 recycling centers that involve thousands of steel collectors for recycling.
According to the company, DeAcero stands out because it consumes less than one cubic meter of water for every ton of steel it produces, well below the industry's global average of three cubic meters. Its carbon dioxide (CO₂) generation rate per ton is the lowest in the country
DeAcero will invest $1.3 billion in its new steel mill and rolling mill in Ramos Arizpe. In addition, $89 million will be spent on a plant in Mexicali, and it will modernize its plants in Celaya and Saltillo. In addition, it purchased five metal scrap crushers from the Italian company Danieli. Four will have a crushing capacity of 50 mt/h and one of 100 mt/h.
DeAcero is the largest consumer of metal scrap in Mexico. The new mini mill in Ramos Arizpe could begin operations in the first quarter of 2026.
