Mexico’s secretariat of environment and natural resources, Semanart, has approved Mimosa, a mining subsidiary of local steelmaker AHMSA, to build a cogeneration plant.

The plant will be fed with methane gas and is expected to generate 19.2 megawatts of electricity to both AHMSA’s mining operation, Mimosa, as well as to the company’s nearby mills. The approval is valid for a period of 40 years.

Mimosa, which has been part of AHMSA since 1994, has a 4 million mt/year coal capacity, which is used to supply AHMSA’s mills.
