Mining union will extend strike at ArcelorMittal Mexico until August

In the labor dispute between the Mining Union led by a Mexican Congressman and the Mexican unit of ArcelorMittal, the court procedures are escalated so the paralysis of the blast furnace and the mine will extend until August 7, the date of the “constitutional hearing”. As of that date, there will be 76 days of strike and almost half a million metric tons (mt) of liquid steel production will have been lost.

Due to the blockade of the ArcelorMittal facilities since May 24, as of today (June 25) it has been 33 days, which is equivalent to a loss of production of around 217,000 mt of liquid steel, another similar amount of rebar and thousands tons of iron ore or iron pellets.

Two labor courts ratified that the blockade of the Mining Union, headed by Senator Napoleón Gómez Urrutia (soon to be a member of the equivalent of the United States House of Representatives) is illegal.

For this reason, "last week ArcelorMittal Mexico presented the request to the Federal Court of Collective Affairs to terminate the Collective Labor Agreement of Section 271 of the Mining Union", the company's public relations agency informed SteelOrbis.

Despite the damages of stopping the production of more than 217,000 mt of liquid steel, another quantity of rebar and thousands of tons of iron ore, the court ruled that “no guarantee is set, because the damage that could be caused is not patrimonial.”

Until the constitutional hearing ArcelorMittal will have lost 500,000 mt of liquid steel production, a similar amount of rebar and thousands of tons of iron pellets. In the first 20 days of blockades, ArcelorMittal said losses were in the millions.
