Novokuznetsk Iron and Steel Plant (NKMK), a subsidiary of Russian steel producer Evraz Group (Evraz), has announced that it has produced the first trial batch of improved working strength rails for the Moscow and Saint Petersburg city metro systems.

NKMK's new rails are produced from low-alloyed steel with high chrome content, and have special mechanical properties which ensure higher contact endurance strength of steel and accordingly increase the lifespan of the rails.

The trial batch of rails has been sent to consumers for testing, including operational tests in city metro systems, as well as for tests at the Russian Railway Research Institute.
