The Russian steelmaker Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) has announced that, following the completion of a large-scale refurbishment of the process water supply system and the introduction of new technology, it has discontinued the discharge of industrial effluents into the Voronezh River, whilst decreasing its consumption of river water by three times.

Within the scope of this project, NLMK has constructed a network of new pipelines, commissioned new pump stations and reconstructed existing ones. As a result of these measures, water can be re-used in the production process, without having to draw water from the river.

The project reached a cost of Ruble 600 million (approx. $18.86 million) and was implemented as part of NLMK's technical upgrade program.
