The Russian steelmaker Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) has announced that it has successfully passed the annual certification audit of its environmental management system for compliance with requirements of the international standard ISO 14001-2004.
Accordingly, the auditors of technical inspection association TUV CERT, Germany, have examined NLMK's business units, technical services and current environmental management documentation, and have confirmed that the company fulfils its environmental protection commitments.
Over the last year and a half, NLMK has implemented a number of major environmental projects including revamping the process water supply system, reconstructing converter off-gas ducts with a secondary dedusting system, and revamping electrical precipitators for kilns in the refractory shop. NLMK also decommissioned four obsolete coke batteries with process equipment and part of a coal tar chemical processing cycle two years earlier than planned, all of which resulted in a 75 percent reduction of emissions from coke production facilities in its main production site in Lipetsk.
