Oman-based steelmaker Jindal Shadeed Iron & Steel, part of Indian steelmaker Jindal Group, has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Oman and Etihad Rail Company (OERC) to establish a sustainable end-to-end logistics solution between Jindal’s plant at Sohar port and the UAE through a railway network.
With the help of this new deal, Jindal will be able to transport up to 4 million mt of raw materials and finished products per year from Sohar port to the UAE markets. On the other hand, the company will also optimize its operational integration with the support of OERC’s state-of-the-art railway network.
In addition, this new collaboration will also help Jindal to achieve its sustainability objectives and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the UAE and Oman. These two nations aim to be carbon-neutral by 2050.
As SteelOrbis reported earlier, Jindal will establish a carbon capture pilot plant in Oman by 2026 in accordance with its decarbonization plans for steelmaking.
“This is an important milestone for our company as we look forward to further expanding the reach of our high-quality, industry-leading products in the region and beyond. Our ability to seamlessly transport nearly 4 million mt of raw material will greatly help us in our operations, supporting our ambition to reduce our carbon footprint,” Harsha Shetty, CEO of Jindal, stated.
OERC was established as a joint venture between Etihad Rail, the UAE’s national railway network, and Oman Rail, Oman’s national railway network operator, in September 2022.
