Outokumpu to end temporary layoffs at Tornio due to demand recovery

Finland-based steel producer Outokumpu has announced that from the end of September its Tornio Works in Finland will end the currently ongoing part-time temporary layoffs for about 900 maintenance and support functions employees. The decision was taken following the company's plan to increase its production capacity, as the order intake for deliveries after the summer vacation period has shown some recovery.

Accordingly, Tornio plant's currently idled melt-shop will start production and working shifts at the steel production lines will be increased at the beginning of September, i.e., one month earlier than planned. "The plan is, however, not to return to full production capacity at this stage," reads the company's release.

Outokumpu's Tornio Works in Finland employs 2,300 people, of which over 1,800 have been affected within the scope of the fixed-period or part-time temporary layoffs in the April-October period this year.
