Portugal-based energy company EDP and ArcelorMittal Tubarão, Brazilian subsidiary of global steel giant ArcelorMittal, have inked a deal to carry out a technical and economic feasibility study for a green hydrogen pilot project in Brazil.
As part of the project, ArcelorMittal Tubarão also aims to increase steel production with low-carbon emissions.
In the first stage, both parties will assess the technical, economic and environmental aspects of the project. They will also define the scope and requirements necessary for its implementation and will establish a solid basis for decisions regarding the following stages of the partnership. The study is expected to be completed within a year.
ArcelorMittal Group is committed to become carbon-neutral by 2050. “The study in partnership with EDP represents another significant step on this journey. With this collaboration, we will explore the possibility and feasibility of, in the future, incorporating and applying hydrogen as part of our production process, contributing, together, with alternatives to becoming a carbon-neutral company in the future,” ArcelorMittal Flat Carbon Latin America CEO Jorge Oliveira stated.
