On June 1, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUİK) released the quarterly domestic construction sector indicators of the first quarter of 2009.
Accordingly, in the period in question, the quarterly production index in Turkey's domestic construction sector decreased by 20.1 percent, compared to the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, the production index in domestic building construction fell down from 98.0 to 68.4, decreasing by 30.2 percent, while the production index in civil engineering rose from 110.6 to 139.7, increasing by 26.3 percent, all compared to the first quarter of 2008.
Moreover, the quarterly turnover index in the domestic construction sector, with the base year 2005=100 and calculated according to the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community, Rev. 1.1 (NACE Rev.1.1), decreased by 5.9 percent in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Meanwhile, the quarterly index for hours worked in the construction sector decreased by 19.6 percent in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
