As of July 1, 2009, Russia has increased the tariffs on rail freight transportation by an average of 5.7 percent.

In addition, Russian Railways (RZhD) has offered to increase tariffs on rail freight transportation by 11.4 percent in 2010 provided that it is allowed keeps half of its state subsidies, RZhD's president Vladimir Yakunin has said.

In 2009 the approved average tariff growth was eight percent instead of 14 percent as had been planned earlier. In order to compensate RZhD for its losses from the smaller tariff increase, the state has given RZhD a subsidy of Ruble 50 billion (approx. $1.608 billion).
